I usually use Biosilk, which you can find at CVS (a little goes a long way, and I would stay away from the roots if your hair is thinner). I am a hairstylist, I've found the best way to achieve those kind of curls is to use a 1/2" barrel curling iron. take an inch section of hair, spritz it with a firm hold hairspray (vavoom works good, if not professional product use sebastion), then take the curling iron and point the end of the iron up (toward ceiling) and gently pull down inch section of hair until you reach the end and twist up to about an inch from your root. hold for at least 10 seconds and release. this should create a real nice spiral looking curl within a half hour those curls will start to loosen up a little, and I think after loosening, this is the look your going for.
