Why don't black female celebrities wear their hair naturally? It's always permed, relaxed,

I have always wondered this. As a child I wanted to have caucasain hair cuz everyone laughed at my curls but now I love them and would'nt swap them for the world! Am I the only person who feels this way, do alot of people feel the need to conform to straight all the time? India Arie/ Erykah Badu are the only exeptions I know of, at least young black and mixed race girls have 2 positive role models!

its the sex-symbol factor. to the general public, india, arie and erykah badu are not "sexy" as, say, Ciara or Gabrielle Union. the U.S. is 70% White, therefore the general female beauty standard is that which embodies "White" physical charachteristics. Since very few people of African descent have naturally straight or wavy hair (unless they are descended from Ethiopia,Eritrea, Sudan, or other north african countries whose population is which by American standards is considered "mixed race", wearing a straight weave brings them closer to the American standard of beauty. This isn't everyone, disclaimer, because natural hair styles have become fashionable over the past decade or so, liked by people of all races.

For the young woman who said some black folks hair "isn't naturally curly but....wild and untamed", what do you consider "tame"? Straight, European textured hair? Anything other than wooly or kinky/curled African textured hair? Is wild hair that which you can't use a fine-toothed comb with?

Some people are just genetically never going to have long hair, and thus they wear weave to achieve what they want and can't make naturally, similar to breast implants, liposuction, and collagen.

Yes, weaving, relaxing, perming, pressing is a personal choice, and not everyone sees it as conforming. For some, straight hair offers a greater variety of styling options. And many simply do not know how to heathfully style their natural hair, having been pressed or relaxed from an early age, and having been taught that "nappy" hair is undesirable and unmanageable, and "new growth" was worse than a female mustache, afraid of rain and swimming lest they mess up their hair, disdainful of exercise in case they "sweat their perm out". But for others who wear it natural, there are just as many options: cornrows in hundreds of designs, flat twists, two strand twists, afros, locs, individual braids, twist sets, rod sets, straw sets, updos, roller sets, ponytails, french rolls, wash %26amp; go, the list goes on and on. PLUS the option of temporarily straightening it with blow drying and flat irons.

for the record, i am 19 years old, and only wore my hair relaxed for three years, ages 11-14. before 11, and since 14, it has been natural. so i have been on both sides. i straightened it because i was teased for having "nappy hair"(which i used to wear in afro puffs and beaded pocahontas braids), but once i got to high school, i disliked looking like everyone else, wore micros for about 4 months to get some "new growth", and cut off my relaxer. haven't looked back since, and, besides a couple naysayers, everyone likes it, and, truth be told, the guys think its sexy! even the white guys!

Because they can. Same as when ladies with curly hair or wavy hair us a hair straigntener, or vice versa. Nobody likes what they have and we are all guilty of just that in some way.

They do it for the same reasons many non-celebrities do it. A) They like the versatility relaxed hair gives you. B) They feel that they will not be considered attractive with natural hair. Most women that I know (including myself) conform to some sort of pointless beauty standard, whether it be removing all hair from their bodies or wearing make up or breast implants. Everyone does it. It doesn't necessarily signify self-hatred.

im sorry, whas wrong with a perm? why is that negative? why do you need natural hair to be a positive role model? and second everyone doesnt have natural "curls" some peoples natural hair is untamed and wild. just because your hair doesnt have a relaxer doesnt mean it will come out in curls. like my hair. my sister has natural hair and i wouldnt trade a day of my relaxer to what she goes thru. my hair is a quick easy fix compared to what she goes thru in the morning and i think relaxed hair is just as beautiful and just as "positive"

Because it's their hair and they use it to express themselves the way they choose, just like you do.

Stay away from definitive comments like ALWAYS.......You are generalizing due to your personal experiences. I am sure that there are many woman (black or otherwise) that wear their hair, as you say it, naturally.....And what is natural to some is not natural to others. I have crazee curls too ( I am not black by the way) and I love them too. I leave them the way they are most of the time and others times I like to experiment with straightening etc.........Someone might ask you the same question but opposite....

"Why do all the black women I know always have their hair natural? Why don't they style it once in a while or experiment?"

Do you see my point. Hair, clothes, jewelery, thoughts, likes, habits, dislikes, turn ons, fashion, books, It is all personal preference.

Thats a personal choice. Maybe their reason for wearing their hair straight, relaxed, etc. are simply because they like how it looks. I don't think of straightening my hair as conforming. I like to straighten my hair because it is easier to deal with on a daily basis. I'm not trying to make you think how I think but not everyone sees the relaxing or braiding of their hair as conforming. Hair is hair and if people can look beyond it I'm sure they can find people they can look up to. India Arie is someone whose music I find to be very good...because she writes about meaningful things and self love. But...I do not think I would like her simply because she wears her hair the way she does.

I KNOW!!! Always a weave, down their backs. And we aren't saying it isn't cute, it usually is but I have noticed every time you turn on the TV, theres nothing but women with all that high piled extension, looking like lions manes (BEYONCE) lol

Plus u are right about wanting a white girls hair, I remember wishing I was white because I thought that only white people could be on TV, goes to show underlying messages do influence.

(uh uh don't listen to these girls, they don't understand the question)

Every woman always wants the other womans hair. Even I do. I have long straight hair and I always wanted a perm. Now I just wish it was wavy. I love wavy hair. And to answer your question about black women most have overly frizzy fried looking hair. If my hair was like that I would probably want it smoother also. Its softer and prettier looking.

Why does their hair being natural make them positive role models? Not everyone has naturally curly hair and people prefer to do what works well for them and their appearance. I don't see where going natural makes Erykah Badu a positive role model when she sings of smoking marijuana in one of her songs. You mentioned that you loved your curly hair, well I personally don't like mine curly or natural so I wear it straight because I like it that way. You're doing what you like with your hair so why can't everyone else?

Because it hasn't been accepted in the mainstream yet - once its the new trend, then everyone will be starting to do it and it be more accepted by the general population. You saw how long it took "curvy" actresses to be thought of as hot. And I only put quotation marks around "curvy" because they usually refer to the standbys of Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez who have become mainstream.

have you saw beyonce without her weaves? her hair is a mess and its because of all the extensions. her hair is about 2 inches long so i doubt its a good look. not all black women are blessed with perfect curls you know. most afros are weak and very brittle, they can only be controlled with relaxers which are very harsh on their hair so most just set it with heat into curls, it smoothes the hair out and is better for it.

most black ppls hair is naturally curly

DUH.
